The Xbox 360 is another PS3 wannabe

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

We won’t say exactly a PS3 fan but what recently became as hot news on the internet was enough for us to guess that Xbox would want to live the fame that PS3 lives. A recent advert of Final Fantasy XIII for the Xbox 360 had a footage of PlayStation 3 within it… Ahem, ahem! Though both (the PS3 and the Xbox 360) the consoles are high end devices that come up with amazing visuals for every game that we play on them yet Play Station 3 seems to have had the advantage all the time. Might be it is the Japanese blessing that keeps them ahead of all. The ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) ruling said: “We considered that, because the ad promoted the game on the XBOX 360 platform, it should have featured footage derived from that console.” “Because it did not, and because we considered that the use of PS3 footage in the ad exaggerated the quality of the footage available on the XBOX 360, albeit marginally, we concluded the ad was misleading.” Due to the above act of Xbox boasting of visuals from Play Station 3 in its ad the officials of ASA have banned the advert from British TV. The best part is that Final Fantasy XIII has been running since March and this September should witness Final Fantasy XIV on Play Station 3. Meanwhile, Final Fantasy maker, Square Enix, has defended the ad claiming that the offending footage was taken from cinematic cut-scenes and was compressed for broadcast purposes, although it admits that it was ‘played back’ on a PlayStation 3. Furthermore, the publisher tells the ASA that it “…did not believe any average viewer, or indeed avid gamer, would perceive any difference in the output (of the two versions) unless reviewing the materially forensically.” [via Yahoo! Robotic engineering for golf courses

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

Are you aware of the fact that there are around 32,000 golf courses on this planet? Well, I wasn’t aware of this number up til now. I agree that 32,000 isn’t that huge but when compared to the size of even the smallest golf course on this planet, I would say that 32,000 is enough for any wannabe Tiger Woods. Cashing on the non availability of any lawn mowing machine that does the job all by itself, Precision Path Robotics has come up with something pretty fancy which can actually revolutionize lawn mowing. Says Jason Zielke, Precise Path’s President and COO. “Mowing is the first in a long list of applications we have envisioned — from spraying to snow removal to carving advertising logos in lawns.” I guess Jason has said it all. This robot can be used for plenty of applications and the day is not far away when people will love to show off this robot in their lawns. Set it and leave it! It is interesting to watch the small calculation made by people behind RG3 (the lawn mowing robot) on their blog. They seem to have sit down with the superintendent of some golf course to discuss the details of money that is being spent on mowing the golf course. The golf course will be able to save $47,700 per year on its labor cost and it will experience a jump of $32,400 in its annual revenues once the golf course starts using the very innovative RG3. Bina48: First human like robot that can chat

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

We are seeing more robots with each day and it’s really a surprise what they can do. Some of them are playing instruments , some of them are practical and some are just looking like us. Now for the first time we have a robot that will actually talk directly with us. This robot is called Bina48 and it’s another human-like robot . It can make all sorts of human facial expressions because it is using 30 motors for that purpose but we have seen all of that before. Most interesting thing about this robot is that it has certain amount of artificial intelligence so it can actually chat with you. Although conversation with Bina48 won’t be the same like with a real human being it’s still a huge step forward when it comes to robotics. Chatting with Bina48 is similar to chatting with a online chatbot but in person since this robot is designed to look and act like one of its owners Bina Rothblatt. Interesting thing about this robot is that it’s actually just a robotic head with no body so conversation with it can be sometimes awkward because of it. In order to communicate with Bina48 you cannot simply talk to her face to face, instead you’ll have to use a specific microphone. Although conversation with this robot might not be always natural since Bina won’t understand you and respond as it should in all cases it still a progress when it comes to robotics and artificial intelligence. Overall, Bina48 is an interesting robot and we’re hoping to see more robots like this in future. Review: Creative ZiiSound D5 Bluetooth Wireless Speaker System

Monday, July 12th, 2010

After reviewing the Creative Inspire S2 wireless 2.1 speaker system in May this year, we’ve been recently offered the chance to review the new Creative ZiiSound D5 – also a speaker system with emphasis on bluetooth in mind. For those who remembered the Inspire S2, you will see in this review that the new ZiiSound D5 has little in the way of similarity, with the latter being more of an iPod / iPhone specific device. The new ZiiSound D5 is also a more pricier item compared to the former sitting within the £250 and upwards niche, in this review, we’ll take you through the D5’s design, features and most important of all, is it worth your money? Design Creative have done a fantastic job of giving the ZiiSound D5 a perfect start, straight from the packaging you can tell they want you to be a happy customer with your new purchase. Everything is compactly packaged, there is no waste of space, the ZiiSound D5 itself however may deceive many as being slim and lightweight, it is in fact heavier than it seems – weighing in at approximately 2.5 kg. The one piece ZiiSound D5 speaker system is and feels tough and well made, it is by no means rubbery and plasticky to touch in any of its components. We especially liked the touch sensitive panel used to control volume as well as initiate bluetooth connection, the ZiiSound team have designed this superbly well, making the panel seem ‘hidden’ to the first time user. Controls were less elegantly done round the back though, where the on / off switch, aux inlet and power cord plugs in. Nevertheless, we would say the ZiiSound D5 certainly has the stylish looks capable of competing with similar speaker systems within its price range. Features With Creative having released iPod dock / speaker systems in the past (such as the Creative Speaker Docking Station X30 and Creative Playdock i500), you can probably say that the key selling point for the ZiiSound D5 (apart from its design) is bluetooth connectivity plus iPod / iPhone docking. With bluetooth connectivity though, there are always issues, one of the most commonly encountered is battery life. Streaming audio via bluetooth from an iPod and especially from an iPhone will literally suck the life out of its already insufficient battery. With this not so good idea, we were pleased to see that Creative also desiged the D5 to be a charging dock. For iPods and earlier iPhones not capable of this function, Creative have included within the box a bluetooth adapter / dongle (as pictured). This also serves as the connector between your device and the ZiiSound D5 speaker system. Like the Inspire S2 , the ZiiSound D5 speaker system isn’t just for iPods and iPhone strictly speaking, because if you have any other A2DP supported mobile phone or device such as laptops, you would still be able to connect without the need for a dongle. However, this is where we noticed an issue. When the iPod or iPhone is docked, audio continues to be delivered to the speakers via bluetooth and not via the already docked 30-pin adapter. This to us seemed rather silly, because this would mean that there is no other solution in terms of preventing the so called bluetooth control lag (lag experienced when change volume and changing tracks), apart from plugging in the aux jack. We had no problems with the D5’s music quality at low to moderate volumes, it was largely a pleasant experience, it is though, not the type of speaker system you would want for combining deep bass and loud volume. The D5’s integrated bass port at its rear is simply not capable of this combination without distortion to its performance, this was difficult for us to forgive given its pricetag. Practicality and Usability Creative’s new ZiiSound D5 speaker system maybe slim and stylish, boasting two convenient connectivity options, but potential buyers should still remind themselves that it is not a portable speaker system. We liked the easy to use bluetooth connectivity, it was simple to setup, most would not require the use of instructions after the first time. For those reading this review and want to connect with the speakers to a PC via bluetooth, the pass code is 0000. We liked the fact that when you’re connected you can adjust volumes from both ends, ie from the speakers or from the device. We also adored the touch sensitive panel on the D5, though we would probably have liked to see two more keys for moving up and down through the playlist. Conclusion Frankly speaking, the Creative ZiiSound D5 is no JBL Harman Kardon, but its stylish looks will prove to be significant to many. Majority of iPod and iPhone bluetooth docking systems will have anticipated problems as we have briefly highlighted in this review and the ZiiSound D5 was no exception. If the lack of a high performance subwoofer matters to you, then we would recommend looking into alternatives such as the JBL Harman Kardon Go And Play Version 2 Speaker Dock (though not wireless) and the B&W Zeppelin Mini as the ZiiSound D5 would not be a wise bid. Otherwise if the ZiiSound D5’s pricetag suits your budget then you should feel confident that you’re investing your money into a set of stylish, quality speakers which boast versatile connectivity. Pros Slim, stylish design Solid build Clean and tidy, just a power cable Easy to use Bluetooth (up to 30 feet) and aux jack for audio connectivity Cons Priced relatively high end Dock functions as power source only not music connection Laggy bluetooth control Distorting audio quality with deep bass You can now find us on Twitter @GadgetLite and Facebook … Check out our new The Munkey mobile phone stand giveaway! Telescopic eye implant from VisionCare Ophthalmic Technologies

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Technology and medicine have a tight bond and with the development of technology we’re seeing all sorts of different medical improvements. As technology develops we’re seeing medical implants that can improve our health but we were never hoping to see something like this. Many people are suffering from partial or full loss of vision nowadays. While vision can be corrected with glasses in mild cases, sometimes surgery is required in order to restore the sight of the patients that are suffering from severe loss of vision. In order to avoid dangerous surgeries researches from VisionCare Ophthalmic Technologies have developed certain implant that might help people with severe vision loss. Interesting thing is that this device has existed for over a year but FDA has approved it few days ago. This little device is an eye implant and although it looks rather small it’s actually a powerful telescope. I don’t know if you would like to have a telescope inside your eye, but this device is rather effective. According to the manufactures, this implant is intended for patients that are more than 75 years old and that are suffering from the end-stage macular degeneration. Although this device isn’t entirely safe it was able to help people that have damaged vision. According to the recent survey, 75 percent of 200 people have reported that this implant was able to help them with their sight. We’re waiting for more surveys and results soon enough. As for this eye implant, it cost $15000. [via Engadget ] You can now find us on Twitter @GadgetLite and Facebook … Check out our new The Munkey mobile phone stand giveaway!
